too soon. madison square garden on google where is it on the iphone 5. the mapping problems that have apple apologizing. at this hour, the biggest cycling event of its kind in years. critical mass is mashing a milestone complete bay area news coverage, starts right now. this is bay area news at 7:00. good evening, t is friday, september 28th, i'm gasia mikaelian, this is bay area news at 7:00. thousands of bicyclists are riding through the streets of san francisco at this hour as the cycling movement known as critical mass marks the 20th anniversary. we have a camera riding along with the crowd tonight. take a look. this is a live picture from the back of a pedicab. it is the leaderless event with no preplanned routes. takes place on the last friday of each month.

the first one took place in san fran and since spread to some 300 cities worldwide. the idea here is seufpl isel, a fun ride for anyone who wants -- simple, a fun ride for anyone who wants to join in. they are in union square. typically they don't stop for traffic signals and over the years there has been a confrontation with a motorist caught up in backed up traffic. we are live where the focus tonight is on the younger generation of riders. >> we expect the pedicab to come through with our camera any minute now. we are looking at the smaller version called kidical mass. it is the monthly random bike ride around san francisco. we join inside with our camera on the ground following along with this group and it has grown beyond the bay area. >> we have people from europe, germany, france, italy. >> it was a plan i made in two

years. >> reporter: macaroni is a bike activist through europe. when he heard of today's event he had to be part television. he left belgium headed to mexico city where he spent six weeks to build this bike he rode to san francisco. >> riding the bike was the most effective way for me to move around and not spoil the environment that i am in. >> reporter: that is the message they want to pass along. many youngsters joined in. >> parents got together and they decided to create a kidical mass, a ride within their ride. inviting parents and kids riding safely together. >> there were parents and parent teams often connected by one bike. sharing the experience with his son is price stphaols -- priceless. >> for me it is people conneglecting with bikes and

there are alternatives to -- communicationing and getting along with bikes and there are alternatives to travel. >> we have not heard of any problems, we will stay on top of this. >> reporter: live in san frsc channel 2 news. >> to find it and other events look for the story under our bay area news tab. a vigil is underway right now for a 12-year-old girl who was killed while riding her bike home from school. the family provided us a photo. she was riding against traffic on nevado boulevard when she was struck by an suv yesterday. her family tells us the 7th grader wanted to be a veterinarian and would see horses on that side of the road. the family moved here from new mexico just five weeks ago. >> so gifted. so much -- so much to give. she had so much potential.

>> today the police say that drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the accident. the driver is from out of state. the police are looking into a cell phone found at the scene played in the role. >> reporter: we see overpasses named after people. but a new bridge bears the name of a toddler. xander's cross eg, allowing them to cross the railroad tracks. the footbridge is named after a 2-year-old who was killed by a train in 2005. the little boy was in the care of a friend of a baby-sitter when the accident happened. they were taking a well-used shortcut across the tracks. the bridge will save lives, his mother said. >> i just hope that people are smart enough to use it. i hope they use it, you know, instead of still cut across. what is a couple of seconds? >> reporter: the $10 million bridge was paid for with a mix of local, state and federal funds. the search expanded today for the mom who left her

daughter behind after an attempted shoplifting in morgan hill. robert honda says the mother is on the run with her baby boy. >> reporter: a morgan hill police officer and a representative of child protective services came to the home of martha kelins mother here today. as we have been reporting. on september 19th the 38-year- old drove off and left her 10- year-old daughter behind after they were caught trying to leave the safeway store with a cart full of unpaid items. >> police? >> the 10-year-old daughter is staying with her grandmother. today the authorities were there to give her temporary custody of the child. that is when the police found out she is on the run with her son, ashton between 11 and 12 months old. >> our detective contacted them via telephone. she is in the tahoe area. they may be suicidal.

14. he is free on $100,000 bond and on leave from the school district. the da's office says that charges are pending while the police continue their investigation. the police say that a burglar stole $20,000 worth of computer equipment from the mar island academy. the charter school is renting space from the omega boys and girls club. students say they are devastated. >> we are all fighting for -- to have a good life here. for someone to come to our school and steal it is disappointing. >> the school plans to move computers from other class rooms until they can replace the equipment that was stolen. firefighters say working smoke detectors helped a mother and daughter escape a fire. it broke out at 7:00 a.m. in the willow glen neighborhood. flames spread across the homes roof. that roof eventually collapsed. the cause of this fire is under investigation. santa cruz is getting help in its efforts to recover from

damage caused by the japanese tsunami. it traveled across the pacific in march of 2010, damaging the wharf. they were awarded a $850,000 grant for business development. some received $778,000 grant to help rebuild the habbor and downtown commercial area damaged by the tsunami. bay area scientists were in washington, d.c. today, warning lawmakers about the impact of budget cuts on research into a quack quack warning system. the usgs says they will lose $88 billion in funding if congress does not resolve the budget stalemate that is to trigger across the board cuts in january. they say they would have to halt research on a quake warning system. the system would deploy sensors in quake-prone areas and send warnings cell phones and on- line. >> there could be delays in store for people traveling through san francisco international airport this weekend. the third weekend in a row that crews will be working on runway

lights and safety systems. the two rival runways will chose at 10:00 and reopen at 8:00 a.m. on monday. airport officials say that could cause delays of up to an hour throughout the weekend especially on west coast routes. >> a dozen vet rans are suing the military, saying more should have been done to help them. after they were sexually assaulted. 14 women and five men filed their federal lawsuit today in san francisco. they claimed that the department of defense and top military officials knew about the problem and did not do enough to prosecute the attack ires or stop retaliation against -- attackers or stop retaliation against them. >> it is so humiliating, most would rather die. >> 19,000 military sexual assaults. that00 cases reporter. fewer than 800 prosecuted. the plaintiffs are asking for damages. san francisco's occupy encampment at the corner of

happening now, critical mass cyclists are celebrating a big celebration. thousands of people are moving through the city to mark 20 years of the monthly bike ride. our camera is along for the ride. we are showing you the crowd as it moves along market street. things are going smoothly, so far, as the group makes its way around the city. 10 minutes ago they were in the union square area, now they are on the very busy market street.

of course, drivers have been told well in advance of tonight's ride not to drive in the area tonight because the massive crowd was expected to be as many as 10,000 cyclists strong t. has been peaceful so far. the police are riding along with the bicyclists. we will bring you more throughout the newscast and certainly on the 10:00 news tonight. the new b.a.r.t extension is one step closer to being reality. >> 1, 2, 3 ... >> south bay leaders gather inside fremont to break ground on the extension. part of the project included widening mission boulevard to make way for b.a.r.t tracks. it is a 16 mile extension to san jose and santa clara. weeks after the much- anticipated iphone 5 one feature is getting a lot of negative attention. apple ceo apologized and advised users to go with another provider for one of the best. >> i got lost three times following the maps. >> this man came here to meet

it is time for high school football game. san jose, joe fonzy is live where the game is being played, hi, joe. >> reporter: hi, gasia, it should be a good one. they are both 3-0 in their nonleague games coming into the opener. i talked to the coach before the game about how tough his opposing team coached my matt heniger is, and what they face. >> he closes all gaps. we must be disciplined. last week we did not show that discipline that we are used to at sara. discipline will be the theme for tonight on defense, if we want to have a chance to stop these guys. >> when you look at your roster, redwood and averaging over 100 yards a game, but you spread the ball around with 16 different ball carriers, so, that is pretty incredible. >> our offensive coordinator does a great job of giving multiple guys a ball. we are throwing the ball more

one more update tonight. critical mass bike ride. they keep ongoing here, they could be reaching the castro district thousands are taking part to mark 20 years of the bike ride. what you are seeing is a picture from our own live camera. we are along for the ride showing you the cyclists and the celebration they are putting on tonight. we have been following the crowd as it moves through downtown san francisco and things are going smoothly. drivers were urged to avoid the

area and take a look at this. you don't see this often. only bicyclists, no cars coming through on market street. drivers in the city were warned to leave the car at home or get home early to avoid this. our meteorologist mark tomayo is here and we are expecting a big temperature change? >> yes. the weather pattern changing quite a bit. temperatures topping 100 degrees over the next two to three days. right now as you can see on live storm tracker 2. we have the fog, constant coast side and around san francisco the overcast skies, pacificca, daly city and patchy fog across the bay. as far as temperatures from today. we cooled off quite a bit. the neighborhood cooled off, 10- 20 degrees from yesterday's highs. you can see the readings in the upper 50s in san francisco, the warmest locations, inland, upper 70s to 80s. here is the change, though, the next 2-3 days, beginning

tomorrow. a major warming trend. tomorrow, nothing extreme. here is the real heat for sunday and monday. by monday, the warmest location inland will be around 100 and -- 101 degrees and warming around the shoreline as well. overnight lows, first thing in the morning, chili, upper 40s in the north bay. a lot of 50s for the rest of the raoepblg on. the fog -- region, the fog, hugging it. but, here is the key. high pressure strengthening out here in the pacific. it will strengthen and build in. sunday, the hottest day of the weekend. monday the hottest day of the period. sunday, temperatures inland, upper 90s with the northerly winds in place, it will cheer out the fog e specially for sunday and with that we will have to keep a eye on the fire danger it will be on the increase. it will be a light wind. it is so dry out there and the warm and hot temperatures will boost our fire danger for sunday and monday. we have an excessive heat watch posted for the valleys, the valleys and the hills that begins for sunday and into monday as well.
